phantom knock! or real knock?
Hey everyone as the title says im having a bit of an issue. i drive an 06 Evo 9RS i went to CBRD to get a tune on jan.15th last saturday. chad did what he did leak down check all that good stuff an took me on a saturday not to mention. but anyways he hooks it up to the dyno an pulls a couple times. he comes an gets me an shows me the knock count its high very high. i one point we got 36 counts of knock the engine was pulling timing but was not knocking from what i could hear at all. it was during small load, medium load an even free rev. im going to pull the knock sensor out replace it an put it back with factory torque specs. then i plan on pulling the valve cover to see if anything else is going on with the valve train. just wanted to see if anyone else has had the same or similar problem. mods are as fallowed thanks for any an all advice.
crower 272 (stock springs/retainers)
walbro 255
arp head studs
cosworth head gasket.
(only ones that may play a part)
Thanks, nick

I suggested:
pull the valve cover to check for a broken valve spring or valve train issue
cut the oil filter to check for bearing material
pull front 14mm hex head and slide in screw driver to check balance shaft
check knock sensor...
___________
There is more to the story..
as when the car was purchased it had a second knock sensor zip tied to the one that was installed in the block..
obviously the previous owner was having issues... and with 10,000 miles or so on it??? when it was purchased used? I'd say he dumped it because he couldnt fix it himself..
so now everything needs to be Very carefully looked at to see what is causing it!
the octane level was at 80% when went to calibrate the rpm on the dyno!!

Are you getting the 36 counts of knock at a particular rpm or is it anywhere and everywhere?
If I free rev from idle I regularly get high counts of knock starting at about 2.5k, I also get high knock counts with low load partial throttle from 2.5k to just over 3k rpm, normally when transitioning into positive boost pressure, but from about 3.5k rpm get no knock at all. Timing/fuel changes don't seem to make any difference.
Previously, I had some Tomei procams, and was getting knock in the same rpm areas, although it was normally below a 10 count so I swapped them out. Now I'm running GSC S1's, and Supertech beehive springs and hit high 20's.
