2.4 build motor. is it a good buy?

2.4 build motor. is it a good buy?

hey guys i just need some fellow evo owners opinions about this purchese im about to make. i know someone selling a evo 9 motor thats fully build with zero miles on in. (he crashed his evo while motor was being built)
this is what the guy told me was done to it

he purchesed the motor for 1500 with a blown piston
got macined at westchester crankshaft for 1000. both head and block
ams 2.3 stroker kit 2300
but he got new pistions to make it a 2.4 (said they have something to do with nascar??????????????)600
and lifters were 500
cam gears were like 150 a piece new belts oil pan and tubes 200

hes also throwing in the engine harness, ecu,and the key.

this is my 1st motor build and im unsure of what to look for but the guy seems very friendly and willing to help me out. the cost of all this is 2000 cause he needs the money but he offered to take me to westchester crankshaft to meet the ppl that build it and he has almost all of the reciepts for the build. so if you guys have any input or advice on what to look for or if this is a good buy feel free to let me know thanks alot

ive never heard of a 2.3 4G63 becoming a 2.4...check up on that first.

2.4 is a different block. Move along. He doesnt know what he is talking about.

A 4G63 block with a 100mm crankshaft gives an engine with ~2.3l displacement. Assuming that the engine you are looking at is indeed a 4G63 block and has been bored out to increase dislpacement to ~2.4l (or thereabouts), I would be concerned with the lack of material left between the bores and its effect on the strnegth of the block itself. This compromise in the strength of the 4G63 block is why many people opt for the 4G64 (2.4l) block (as it has quite a bit more material between the bores than the 4G63).

I think you need quite a few more details on the built motor. I would suggest that if you are not super comfortable (and ready to live with the potential consequences if you are being BS'd) that you walk away from the deal no matter how good it seems.

he said he got it machined at 2 places. the 1st one made it a 2.3 then he brought it to to different place that made it a 2.4

i would ask for paper work from each place, even the phone numbers call each place make sure everything is legit, get all the info that way you cant get burned. your looking at someone who has been burning 1 to many times, you need to check all your basis, nefore you go buy a frankenstien engine. even if it has good parts. are the shops repitable? is the person repitable? is there a paper trail on everything thats saids been done.

just off the top of my head i say no. i say find someone that is built by 1 place, with all the info, incase theres a problem you dont have several places and people blaming the other guy.

just seems like a hassle hopefully my advice isnt to late, or good luck with your choice.

I am almost 100% that due to the deck height of the 4G63 the max displacement is 2.3 without significantly modifying the rod/ stroke/ bore to an unacceptable level. The main advantage of the 4G64 block is that the deck height is an additional 6mm.

IE: Run in the opposite direction of this block.

anybody that attempted to turn a 4g63 into a 2.4 is stupid and you would be to buy this junk. Look for another motor boss you have been WARNED several times already leave it be and look for another built block.

For the record, I thought the only way to have a 2.4l was with a 4g64 block. BUT BC makes a 2.4l stroker kit for the 4g63. I would never buy it just throwing it out there that it is possible to make a 2.4l 4g63.

The Crower kit uses a 102mm custom crank and an 86mm bore to achieve its ~2.4l displacement. The cost of this kit alone is way more than what the OP has stated is the asking price for his "deal".

This engine sounds like trouble or the seller doesn't know the details. Be afraid.

Take your money elsewhere.

If you sonic test the block it could easily be a 2.4L. The idea that there is more material between the bore of a 63 than a 64 is not necessary true. If you get all that stuff for $2k that is less than the AMS Stroker kit. I would take that block and remove the 87mm pistons and have the block sleeved and then reuse the 87mm pistons with a sleeved 2.4 in a stock block. I think that would be great. Sleeving a block isnt that expensive and will allow you to guarantee the thickness of the walls. Then you will have no issues with the fitment of a 64 block. If you dont use the block the parts alone are worth way more than 2K. I will give you something for the block and pistons that others are saying is garbage and help you recoup some costs. You could then use your block and save from selling the extra parts.
