Yes you are correct and I agree with your opinion. The higher number changes the color of the light and makes it look "cool" at the expense of reduced light output.

the wattage from the kit will also change the light output. a 6k HID bulb with a 35w kit will look different than a 6k bulb on a 55w kit. the 55w will make it brighter which if i'm correct it will be a whiter shade of that temp.

go with stock bulbs, cant go wrong, all this 6k through 12k crap is for people who wants light bulbs to make their car look cool, Headlights were meant to let you see at night, not blind other people and make your car look cool, the stock bulb is perfect, 6k is not as bad as 8k or higher but the stock is always better,

6000k is the highest temperature you can go before you start losing usuable light. I have 3000K 55w for my fogs and 6000k 55w for my high beams. Headlights are the oem 4300K

My buddy has the stock HIDs and I have 6k aftermarkets. I can't tell much difference, might be different bulb manufacturer inconsistencies. You can go up to 6k.
