I have a Memphis Audio Single Channel Amp, I believe it is 250 Watts RMS powering a Single Orion 10" sub. Just today all of a sudden it went quiet, VERY quiet. I have to turn the gain all the way up to hear it and the sound mixer thingy past 80% to get anything out of it.

Also I noticed a little more engine noise and when I push in my cigarette lighter I hear a pop from the the sub, any ideas?

My guess is that the amp is shot. I would be very certain that all the connections are secure especially power connections. All else fails take the amp to a local stereo shop and have it tested. Also let me know if you are in the market for a good sub amp. I have a quality one that fits under the seat well and will fully power the 10 you are using. Hope this helps.

If you have a multi meter check the ohms on the voice coil. Remove the sub from the box see if it smells burnt and it should be labeled what the voice coil(s) should read while not connected to the amp.
Otherwise somethings wrong with the amp

Right before this happened I attempted to hook up a cap, would this cause it to happen?

did you succesfully hook it up? caps are like sponges they prevent your car audio from being as loud as they should be. they are useless you're better off getting another battery.

Yeah it sounded like it always did after I got the cap on. Then I got into my car to test the light to see if it would flash when the bass hit and then all of a sudden my bass got VERY quiet. I disconnected the CAP and the bass was just as quiet. I have the gain as far up as it will go and the HZ setting all the way up and it is barely audible. Before it thumped the **** out of my car, now it is like maybe I hear bass, maybe?

If it's not grounded right you probably shorted it. Bye bye sub.

Or, it could just be a loose wire. Never know until it's checked.

It wasn't the AMP, that's for sure as I tested a brand new one today. The "Accessory" noise is more prominent.

I had the gain turned all the way up just to hear a faint bass sound. If I used my cigarette light, when I push it in it pops. When I hit the breaks I get a weird sound, turn signals and so on.

I hope it isn't the sub, that would be so bad

Same kinda thing happened to me, But I found a better ground and it worked out. But recently since its been really cold it takes a while for the bass to hit full potential. Like if it has to warm up. very weird.

sounds like a ground issue... What type of radio do you have pioneers are horrible with noise in their outputs. You can ground the outside of one of the rcas it should help with your engine noise
