I'm not sure what you mean by "functioned with proper form" but I guess what you are getting at is form follows function as in a part is meant to do its job the best way possible, and how pretty it looks comes secondary.
The whole JDM bit to me, is just to see who can spend the most on obscure hard to find Japanese parts. It best works for Hondas, who started the craze, because their cars don't come the same way they do over there. We get, for the most part, the same Evo the rest of the world does. No engine swaps are needed.
If you want to mod your car and style it like the people in Japan do, then that could be considred a JDM Evo, and yeah, that would mean using all Japanese parts. But to me, unless you pack your car up and send it overseas to have Amuse or Tomei, or Blitz or whoever tune it too, then it can't really be totally mad tyte JDM yo!!!!1111
But anyway, there are plenty of competant American parts and tuners that will give just as good results.
