Has anyone ever put their NOMEX fire suit in the washing machine?
My SPARCO suit needs cleaning... I just dont trust the local drycleaner...
SPARCO says ...recommends dry cleaning but can machine wash...
What do you do?????

How do I clean / wash my firesuit?
Answer:
Sparco recommends dry cleaning your suit to preserve the life of your safety garment for as long as possible. Your Sparco Race suit should be treated with the same respect as your Sunday Suit. After each driving session, please remove the suit whenever possible and hang dry to remove moisture and to prevent grease/oil from staining the suit while working on your car.
Washing instructions: If you wash your suit, Sparco recommends hand washing or washing it on a delicate cycle in the washing machine with COLD water. Please make sure that the belt and collar are closed on the suit, to prevent the velcro from causing damage to the nomex fabric. Woolite soap is recommended as it is a non-abrasive detergent. DO NOT use bleach or anything similar. When drying the suit, always let the suit drip dry, indoors (out of the sunlight).

well when i was a firefighter we threw our nomex hoods and nomex gloves into the wash whenever it needed cleaning. still battle fires like a champ! well use to anyway...im not a firefighter no more...but i miss it...

Wash it in Molecule, which is made for the purpose and when you put the post wash spray on it improves the fire resistant properties. I don't work for Molecule company but I have used it.

That's what I do after every race weekend. No problems.

Nomex is a thread material, not a chemical that will dissolve in the wash. Sure, the thread can degrade with excessive washing cycles just as it can with extended use. There was a recent article in either SportsCar or GRM which covered this topic. Washing on delicate cycle with a light detergent and hanging dry will not damage your suit and in fact may be preferable to drycleaning if there are any oil based stains on the material.
