It's normal; it's because the car runs crazy rich stock. It's the extra fuel which turns to black soot.

Update

take your car to the dealer and have them put the newest update on and that will clean up the richness a whole bunch. I had this done today and it seems to have taken care of the the extreme richness.

Even tuned you're going to get black smoke. The Cobb guys said the X smokes more than any car they've ever seen.

there is a TSB (technical Service Bulletin) out for this problem. The common complaint is that the car has a very slight amount of hesitation when you step on it at 5k. The problem is caused by the car running too rich, dealer can fix the problem. IIRC the problem is with evo X's produced before april 08.

(it's not a bad problem at all, just the fact that you're running a little more rich than you need to will decrease the life of your cat, if that matters to you)

+1, My car is tuned and still spits out black smoke. My AFRs run in the mid 11s under hard acceleration through the rev band. The X just smokes. Tune or No Tune.
