Aftermarket Downpipes Street Legal
just a quick question. are all aftermarket downpipes not street legal? i emailed Megan Racing and they told me that their downpipes aren't street legal. also, does that mean i'll have to replace it with the stock when i get a smog test? thanks.

The down pipe is the last thing you have to worry about. The first thing that the cops look for is the cat and the catback. Unless they know the stock DP is 2.5 inches"(unlikely) and is willing to jack the car up just to measure it(even more unlikely) otherwise you should be fine.

Yay a fellow San Diegan . That's why most aftermarket part companies advertise their products for "off-road use only". You modify anything before the cat is illegal with the exception of IC pipes and the FMIC. The downpipe is illegal sadly.

seriously man California is too ****. i put an injen intake w/ intercooler piping kit last month and that should be CARB certified. i installed a Greddy Ti-C catback, Perrin HFC, and Injen 3" Downpipe 2 days ago. too bad the Injen DP didnt work because of the ACD. i guess i'll buy the Megan 3" DP.

not sure how it works in CA, but here... the guys that do the emmissions testing are too lazy to even check for a cat on the newer cars.. they just jack there computer to your ODBII under the driver dashl to the right. The way it works here is, on a new car... if your'e not already throwing a CEL, most likely you'll pass the emissions 'test'. Older cars get the rollers and the sniff tests.

Keep your stock DP, Cat and Exhaust. So when it's time to do a smog. Just rent a lift or use a garage to put the OEM parts back on. It may sound like a pain in the @$$ but it's only once a year.

EVERYTHING IS ILLEGAL IN CALIFORNIA. I don't know why everyone is saying that "they won't look at the downpipe." Its easier to look at the downpipe than to look under the car for the cat. Your downpipe will be the 2nd or 3rd thing they will look at: muffler portion of exhaust, intake modifications, turbo-back modifications etc.
