Piston Rod install direction? Scat - Need help ASAP
Hey, I posted here on evolutionm.net cause I got no answer over on a dsm site.
I have scat h-beam rods and need to know how do you tell what direction to install these. The rods look the same on both side. One side has numbers stamped into them.
I am also using wiesco pistons and the DOT on top go towards the FRONT or Timing side right?
Also do I use the diagram for ring end gap placement or use the factory manual cause they are different.
Motor is a 91 4g63t

Yes just put the tangs toward the exhaust side of the engine, the dot on the pistons go on the timing belt/ front of the engine. The rings gaps should always be staggered. The instruction sheet that comes with the Wiseco's explain how to very well. Good luck.

After 4 days someone on dsmtuners wrote and said the same things you guys posted.
Yeah I followed the instructions for the pistons, I did the end gaps the way they had them in the picture.
The instructions said to align the offset-ted wrist pin be in the direction the motor rotates in, just wanted to make sure I got it right with it being towards the timing side.
I over filed 1 set of rings TOP RING .021 and BOTTOM RING to at least .025 (I can't measure past that) so I'm awaiting new ones but everything went great pistons slide in nice all I used was a painters stirring stick that was enough force with my hand.
I am using a .019 top ring and .023 bottom ring

I don't have any friends here in FL that have done this before. Maybe when I lived in NJ but down here no one has a car never mind rebuilding a motor.
I will say most people here would be V8 guys. My machine shop never seen a 4g63. They get boat motors that are 4 cyl. turbo diesel, v6s and v8s. I had to school them on MLS HG.
They said are you putting a turbo on this. I'm like no it comes turbo.
A turbo eclipse.. Yeah..
AWD too... They make a AWD Eclipse.... Yeah...
Then came the buster of all.
How can a 4 cylinder make more then 250hp.. I was like all boost. They make evo and eclipse running 1000hp no NOS with this same motor.
While there drooling over the Chevy v8 they had sitting there that was gonna make 400hp.. WOW watch out!
They just said well when we see it we'll believe it, I said they go on youtube and look it up.

I have to warm up this quite old thread.
Why should the tangs placed on the exhaust side? As already mentioned here, the OEM direction is to the intake side.
Is there is technical explanation?
I have thought the intake side should be better, because when the explosion power hits the piston, the piston is at TDC an more far. I this situation (0 deg to 45 deg ATDC) the upper part rod bearing is the most loaded part. An in this situation shouldn't it be better when the tangs are most of the time below the load? And this would be on the intake side?

I'm curious too...I know on my stangs 302 blocked motor it matters but its cuz there's 2 rods that share the same journal on the crank and one side of the rod is chamferred n the other isnt. I think the 2 chamferred sides run against each other....still doesn't help but I'm curious on this since my rods and pistons are out
