burning smell

I noticed the same thing, the first time I smelt this rubber burning smell was right after the AWC reflash but had summer tires on at that time.
Then a few weeks ago winter tires and a 2 and half hour trip up to the mountains and I smell it again. It was coming from the back end of the car.
Now the past couple of days I have been smelling it when I come into work, only have a 15 min. ride in. Can't wait to hear about this recall when it comes out. Just might make a trip into the dealer to have them look at it on the weekend.

When I first bought this car in the summer, I could smell burning clutch. People have said it is normal for break-in. The smell went away after a couple months.
Now that it's the winter, I've noticed this burning smell from the rear of my car! Much like you all have said: burning rubber; almost a chemical, platic burning smell mixed in. It's very odd.
There is a thread in the Evo X forums about some guy who noticed the same thing. He lifted his rear seats up to check underneath them, and what did he find? His seat burning up. People should check under the rear seats and report back.

I think the conclusion with that issue is that it was NOT the exhaust overheating the foam on the back seats, considering the gas tank is positioned in between the seats and exhaust. It sounded to me more like those burn marks were a chemical reaction. Still might be worth pulling up your rear seat to have a look.

Looks like its safe to say its a widespread problem. I still have it as well after a year of driving regardless of tires, and driving conditions.
Well at least if it the car catches on fire I have GAP insurance .
