Drives: WW 2009 Lancer Ralliart

Angry TC-SST Critical Malfunction!!!

Two weeks ago I was driving in the highway at about 65-75mph in normal mode (cruising in 6th gear obviously) all of a sudden the car went into 5th gear raking the RPM and slowing the car, I was lucky I was not going faster and had both hands the wheel otherwise I could have easily lost control of the car or the car behind me could have slammed into me.

As I was trying to figure what had just happened I slowed down and noticed the car would not take 6th gear I tried to do it manually and nothing happened. As I was slowing down to reach the emergency lane the car jumped from 5th to 3rd and then again from 3rd to 1st gear. I stopped and no warnings light had gone on so I figured what ever it was it was fixed as I accelerated back into the highway the it was still doing the same thing when I manually changed gears It went from 1st to 3rd. For some reasons it did not want to take 2nd, 4th or 6th gears. I stopped again, turned the car off and turned it back on and everything was back to normal.

However, since then the problem has happened 2 more times, the last time been last night. It always happens while I’m cruising at high speeds in normal mode, not in traffic. Each time it seems as if the gears get stuck inside the tranny or something and I have to stop and turn the car off to make it go away. It is really annoying and dangerous as it happens unexpectedly. The weirdest part is that no warning light come on and there is no indication from the car that something is wrong.

Since it has happened 3 times now I am going to take it to the dealer on Monday to complain about it even though I know they usually say they can’t help you if the car warning lights don’t come on. I just want to let them know in case I have an accident and have to sue Mitsubishi.

Has anyone had any similar problems?????

By the way my car is bone stock…. No mods what so ever.

I've read about other SSTs doing this randomly...hasn't ever happened to me though, *knock on wood*. Back when the RAs first came out, there was someone here (I forgot who) who had pretty much the exact same thing happen to him. The dealer replaced his whole transmission unit under warranty, luckily. The whole bill came to around $15k if I recall correctly.

If you're able to replicate it on demand, I suggest you get a passenger to record the MID & gear numbers jumping. Then, show the video to the dealership.

hernandez beat me to it, and with more accurate information!

Thank for the quick reply guys.

Hernandez: do you have any info on the dealer who fixed your car or a number that identifies the problem. Im sure that once I take it to the dealer they would not know anything about the problem and they will ask me to bring the car when the problem happens however I dont feel like waiting another week or so and the 3 times this has happened to me it been pass 7pm and dealer close at 4:30pm. It will really help to put them in contact with another mitsubishi dealer that has delt with the problem. Thanks

Have you guys had any problems when stating the car. I have had about 5 episodes where the car takes more than 5 seconds cranking to start the engine. It feels as if the battery went dead but not.

It's a common problem...I experience it in semi-cold, 35-40F, weather. Dunno if there is a fix out for it yet though

Also could be a bad MAF sensor. Some of the older X's had the same problem.

Nah, just happened to me the other day, even after the AWC reflash was done. Same situation, same problem. I'm gonna call the dealer and see if they have any new info on this tomorrow.

I'd be curious to see what you find out.
