Many have used 215/45-17 with good results.

I had 205/40R17, but they were, as you say, paper thin. I had bought the rims with 215/45R17 and they grind everywhere on the fender. 225/40 can make the tire stick out of the fender a little bit, and you don't want that. I recently bought a set of used OZ rims and they came with 215/40. I've been searching about it and this number is the most promising. I recently downloaded a tire calculator and gave it the factory tire and the new tire and this is what it calculated:
Old Size/ New Size
205-- 215
50-- 40
16-- 17
102 Sidewall(mm) 86
306 Radius(mm) 302
192 Circumference(cm) 190
611 Diameter(mm) 604
521 Rotations/km 527
---- Speedo Diff(%) 101.26
---- Speed @ 100kmh 98.76
I know you'll probably need to do math for conversions, but just by looking at the data you'll get the idea. Also, I found this pic of a ralliart with 215/40. Doesn't have very good resolution, but you can appreciate the wheel-2-tire ratio.
Hope this helps.
Later!
