Cheap mods...

OK, next question, which will again just get me laughed at and redirected.

What are some good, cheap mods...nothing too big, but something that will be somewhat noticeable. I figured since there are members with everything from a stock ES's to completely juiced up EVO's...i could get some good insight.


I really need to stop asking questions that show how new i am not only to this site, but to tuning in general.

Are you looking for cheap mods for appearance or to increase the power?

In terms of cheap, what kind of price range are you looking at? If you are looking at DIY mods there are not going to be very many performance mods that you will be able to do yourself. But if you are looking for style mods there are a bunch that people have been doing (mesh grills, painted calipers, etc.) But it all depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for fairly inexpensive performance mods I would go with things such as CAI, exhaust, etc. www.roadracemotorsports.com is a very good place to look for performance mods for the RA. I would start with them and look around at their site to see what they have to offer.

how cheap do you want. I bought duplicolor caliper paint for about $15 @ wal-mart It took a couple hours to do but came out really good. My best buy had a full neon kit for $60 from streetglow. You can get pedals and shift knobs real cheap. Roadracemotorsports.com is one of the best places for cheap performance parts.

I would assume you mean both performance and visual cheap upgrades. If you want really cheap get some blue headlight bulbs from either MTEC or PIAA, i got my blue MTEC off of ebay for 30 bucks and they are really nice. The DIY grill kit is nice from what i have seen but since i dont have a dremel im just gonna get the stock oem ones. for real, the best performce for the cheapest price is like a new exhaust system (looks nice and sounds nice when you rev).

thanks everyone...i am going to check out that road race site...i am definately only looking for performance mods, i like the way the car looks, and i dont think anything needs to be changed on it. BTW...i am from the south side of chicago, Beverly neighborhood.

easy mods that arent too much money are a good muffler and then look intake. I made mine but even $200 for a good production one isnt too bad. My advise on the muffler is just an axle back one. Full system non TOTALLY needed. Check out Ebay for some decent cheap mufflers. I bought mine on Ebay and it is very nice. Good luck and keep us posted on yoru steps.

I got some brass bushings for the shifter connections, they were only 28 dollars shipped, should stiffen up the shifter a bit.

Ok...so here are my thoughts on an exhaust...maybe this shoule be a new thread, but we were talking about it. A huge, loud, completely free exhaust on a stock engine, and even one with small mods is overkill...there needs to be sufficient back pressure for the engine to fire properly...so i do not want to go that route. As far as performance, you would be better off simply getting a stock exhaust for a car with a bigger engine, so it is still restrictive enough to not make the engine "over breathe". Also, i read on here people were putting K & N filters in their Ralliarts...i have looked all over my town, and all the shops say they do not make one yet. Any help? I hope my input on the exhaust will open up some good discussion.

The exhaust is pretty free-flowing on the Ralliart, so you're right in that respect. However, the muffler is not completely 'wide-open', so the axle-back system would help performance.

Also, check out RRM's new downpipe. Although illegal, it's supposed to give great gains, along with their ECU.

About the filter....a search on that part number on K&N's website will show that all Lancers, ES, LS, OZ, RA, and Evo use that same exact filter. Cheers!

the downpipe is illegal because it throws away the catas... if you somehow manage to throw them back in, u might make yourself a business!

If you throw the cat back in you will significantly kill the power gain from the piece, but a high flow cat might not be a bad idea...a free flowing exhaust will help performance, and even though the stock piping is good doesnt mean that getting something a little bigger is bad. You guys are WAYYYYY to concerned with the "loss of back pressure" thing. You would have to do something pretty dumb to worry about power loss...like 3.5" piping would be considered pretty dumb. Just having piping on the car is going to give you some backpressure, especially if you retain a catalytic converter and a muffler. As far as performance gose, my 2.5" piping and free flowing muffler was the best power jump I have gotten...YET. The intake was good but the exhaust was better. Those 2 upgrades are the first 2 you should do for performance...almost always. The ECU from RRM is GREAT and the downpipe should do wonders also. I am planning on getting my Downpipe here VERY soon.
