What is an ECU core worth?

I understand how people don't like the idea of taking their car off the road to mail an ECU in for a reflash. I'm just curious as to what price would be reasonable to cover the value of an ECU if one were just sent out to a client with the expectation that they return their stock unit?

In the past I took a $100 down for Mazdas but I really got burned where people wouldn't send their stock one back. What is a stock ECU worth to people anyway?

Would you be pissed off if someone asked for a $200 deposit on an ECU but gave it back when you sent your stocker back?

if its a fully refundable deposit then no. i wouldn't mind putting down a $200 deposit...it would make me want to send my ECU back quicker. i guess it also depends on how much a reflash would cost too?

It depends on the overall cost and the cost of a new ECU.

Seems like a workable strategy until they start enabling the immo on these ECUs. Someone sent an australian one up to my business partner and I was not successful at getting that sucker to do anything at all!

Depends on what you can get one for from a junkyard. I just checked car-part.com for ECUs, I see them anywhere from $45 to $350. Most seem to be in the $100 - $150 range. If I were to do a core charge, I'd probably start there.
