It'll cost more to do a conversion than it will to replace the car.

anyone who just refuses to learn how to drive a manual shouldn't be allowed to drive. in fact, should be requirement to learn on a manual and do the road test in a manual. People would be better drivers.

I agree with all of the above posts. Over in the UK you have to take your road test in a manual. It doesn't matter if the majority of cars sold in North America are autos, as Thomar mentioned, they should still do the same here.

And really.. I imagine it isn't an easy swap. Even if it could be done for cheaper than replacing the car, wouldn't it still be better off in the long run to leave as is and buy an auto? Less risk of something going wrong with it down the road. I can only imagine the length of modifications needed to swap transmissions!

I have done an auto to manual swap in a car, my honda. IT was probably the least pleasurable experience of my life. It was easier going from auto to manual, but going the other way would be ridiculous, if not impossible. Need a computer to control the tranny, new wiring harness or run specific wires to the transmission, shift linkage, rip the old manual crap out, not to mention the mounts might not match... Might want to think about an auto beater, or just sell the car and change it up... Good luck, but don't start anything and not fully understand what it entails like I did...

I only know one guy who has done a manual to auto swap, but it was to turn his car into an all out drag racing car, so made sense in his case with the beefed up tranny he had

Like everyone else says, hopefully you can find someone with an auto who wants to swap...
