Noob Help

Hey, just bought an 06 ralliart, looking to do some upgrades but no idea what to upgrade. looking at a full exhaust, but if i install a turbo down the road, the kit im looking at comes with full exhaust. ive seen an ecu piggyback mentioned several times, but would love an explanation. Any suggestions?

If you are going to get that turbo kit that comes with an exhaust, you should save your nickels and get the kit. Why buy an exhaust to just buy another that comes with the turbo kit? Also the exhaust that comes with the kit is most likely matched to the turbo.

A piggy back is a small electronic device which alters signals to your vehicle's ecu. It is a rudimentary way to affect timing to increase power, like the SAFC by Apexi'.

Most peeps like to have direct control of timing so they prefer a stand alone ECU or a flash on the stock ECU. Most evo owners seem to like flashing their stock ECU as it provides the best bang for your buck.

Just remember, if you put a turbo on your car you will need to upgrade everything else like the brakes; suspension; chasis.

Yep, because if you have all that power and don't upgrade the rest the car will explode Why would he need to upgrade everything else? Do the Evo owners upgrade everything else before getting a bigger turbo?

You can still get a catback with the RRM kit.

RRM sells the piggy go to their website.
It should answer most of your questions.

Doesnt say much for performance or installation. 450ish is a stretch not knowing how much it does aha. Anyone using the RRM model that can vouch for it?

I have drove a car with it in.
It felt a little faster but a lot more responsive. Its not that difficult to install if you are somewhat electrically inclined.
If you want the put you in your seat power go with the turbo kit.

install is simple, tap into 3 wires fron piggy, and cut the volt wire so it goes through piggy before signal hits ecu.

in terms of gains, it all depends on the tune, I lost power on the base tune from RRM simply because of different climate, now that i've been tuning it myself, I can feel the difference in power.

If you're first starting to mod your car, I suggest a Cold Air Intake/Short Ram Intake and an Underdrive Pulley. Both are cheap and easy to install upgrades which will give you a decent power boost. You can get both at RRM. Check E-bay for the intake as well. You can find a pretty good deal there sometimes.

thats a good start, i would recommend the under pulley next, then maybe a header/dp, but if you are saving for a turbo kit that comes with this then you should skip that...

you should wait before getting the piggyback ECU. this is because it is pretty expensive and the base map on it (for me) didn't give me much gain. I will have to retune it myself, but if you do not know how (like me) it won't help much getting it early. I suggest getting it close to when you plan on installing your turbo..

ALSO a reflash is now available by a member on this forum, he is just working out the details for a turbo tune i think... this would be much more efficient and cheaper than the piggy back

Sounds about right, and what a buzzkill. That pretty much shot down the whole thing i had going, I got some really nice gold konig rims w/ chrome lip. The Injen Intake. Lowered it 2 inches, 2.5 rear. Tinted the windows. The Evo 8 Spoiler is in the mail. And shiny tire valve caps! I don't know what else to do aha. Is The RRM Turbo a recommended choice? Or is there another brand i should look at in your opinions. And +/- minor modifications the intercooler will fit in the stock bumper?

As soon as the weather clears up here ill wash it and take a decent picture. I bought it off RRM since it was legit. Some of the ebay ones are only approx. pictures, and the sides of the wing are angled way out. My dealer ship was awfully priced, and they wanted $200 to paint it, and $150 it install it, so im doing it myself. I just watched the new fast and furious, and i think i need a turbo aha.
