RIP Tranny: 9/22/04 - 8/7/07
Today, as of 8:43am my oem clutch grab it's final gear,
I had no warning or notice any signs of my clutch going out. Last time I drove her was saturday and she ran like a champ, shifted and grab perfect! No sounds, no hissing, no RPM jumps, absolutely NOTHING, so damn strange.
I had it tow to my local Mitsubishi dealership, the tow guy was cool enough to drop me off at home because I didn't live far from where she final said "goodnight".
I called a local automotive place to get a quote and got hit with $749, ouch! That includes parts and labor, but I was like "you sure that's not 2004 Lancer Evolution" and the guy said "Naw man, im sure",
Im surprised she lasted this long, with all the racing ive done in the past, I would have gave her a life expectancy of 2 years top, if that! 3 years aint bad for all the damage ive done to her. Well, she's now off to a better place,

I gotta remember to replace mine ASAP before this happens to me That's a really high quote, too. Is that for a stock clutch? It's under $200 in parts.

I know if my stock clutch goes out im not having mitsu do it.. thats wayy to much money. It seems. I would take it to a local transmision specialist and im sure it wouldnt cost as much for them to replace it

So parts are only $200? Than why is this place Tokyo Autoparts charging me $749!!! Is labor really $550?!?! I don't know if that was for an OEM clutch or aftermarket though.

Yeah, my first response was have it tow to Mitsubishi because I have that Diamond Care Roadside Assistant, but nope, im not letting them install a new one, they'll rape me!

I should say $200 plus shipping. Prices taken from www.mitsubishiparts.com
Clutch - $72.59 ($100 MSRP)
Pressure Plate - $88.56 ($123 MSRP)
Release bearing - $36 ($50 MSRP)
So even if they're buying parts at full price from the dealer, it's only $273 worth of parts. At the typical $80/hour labor rate, seems they're charging you for about 6 hours. Unfortunately, I have no idea if that's how long it takes or not. Seems like a long time, though.

I'd go with an aftermarket clutch, something that might withstand a bit more abuse if anything...
Mines on its way out I bet... I have some cash saved up just in case. I think I'll get it done in the fall anyways, I'd rather do it now before i find out its on its way out.

I originally wanted to go aftermarket, until I realized just how inexpensive the stock clutch assembly is. Nearly half the price of the cheapest aftermarket. I know I'm nowhere close to overpowering the stock clutch, and it's thusfar proven that it's good for at least 80,000 miles in my case.

Book time on a clutch is like 9 hours I think ... so $550 labor could be accurate depending on your location. That's about $60/hr which is pretty common.
EDIT: My mistake ... thought it was an Evo .. I posted too fast. Book time on a Lancer is still probably 7hrs or so like most cars. Good luck with your clutch replacement.

I got my car in august 2005... and I had to get a replacement for the fork, cluth, pressure plate, etc... It was in december 2007.
The price : it cost 2002$ for parts and labour.
It tooks them 10 hours to do the job at 85$/hour.
Evrything was under warranty since the problem came from the fork that collapsed. I did nothing wrong on the car... they said it could happends! Yeah right!
Just to let you know, I own a Ralliart and it's CAN$.

BAD NEWS
It's not my clutch, Mitsubishi said my clutch was fine, it was my tranmission, its DONE. I broke the tranmission axle or the drivetrain axle, I can't remember exactly what he said. Also my gears chewed and snap. Damage = 4 - 5k
So, she is done, I dont have 5k on me and if I did, I wouldnt put it into her. She was just never the same after my accident last year,
Time to sobb,
Mitsubishi offer to have me trade her in and put me into a new GTS and I refused, I rather have a ralliart, just my personal opinion.

find a used tranny from a RA... i'm sure there are a bunch lurking around it you look at junk yards. I just ordered a used Ford Five Hundred AWD tranny (for work purposes) and it only cost me like 900$ so its significantly less than going brand new..
I wouldn't be surprised if my tranny ****s the bed either.. i have put it through some hellish moments... I'm also having problems getting into 2nd again...
if that's the case since i'm never going turbo.. maybe i should just stick with the oem clutch then...

Mitsubishi's math has always been a bit high for my taste. Here's what I come up with:
Used transmission: $500-$700
Used driver axle: $75-$100
Used passenger axle: $75-100
All prices from www.car-part.com. I know its more than $749, but it's under $4000-$5000.

Damn, those tranny news are othing new here. A good part of the guys here who have a couple mods are breaking trannys, whereas the guys with heavy mods, turbo or nitrous are not having issues...how damn strange
